feature-finalSeeing a lot of followers on an account on Twitter, or likes on Facebook might let you believe that this particular channel could bring in a lot of downloads if you just got your post in there. Our experiences with the mobile game Ace Tales tell a different story. Here are some statistics:


  • Retweeted by a random account with over 400 000 followers – Result: Around 0 downloads.
  • Retweeted by an let’s play account with 38 000 followers – Result: Around 0 downloads.
  • A lot of retweets by accounts having followers ranging from 1000 – 10 000. These didn’t bring in any downloads either.

When I say “around 0 downloads”, I mean that we saw no notable fluctuation in our daily download counts, which was around 200.

The statistics speak for themselves. It’s hard to believe Flappy Bird would have slowly built up a hype on Twitter and other social media and reached critical mass. Please tell me how they did it, because I don’t think anyone is interested in a mobile game, until it becomes interesting. Not until pewdiepie or someone else notable tweets about it. When you compare Flappy Bird and Ace Tales lookswise, they aren’t so much different. Both are flying games and with retweets to 500 000 followers there should be some evidence of downloads taking place.

Twitter seems mostly like a platform for spamming, companies and private persons spamming their stuff to each other. A very small percentage is interested in taking the time to read about others. Justin Bieber might be an exception, when he tweets something there is probably a lot of people seeing his tweet and following up on his requests. If you are trying to shout out your awesome mobile game, you will probably not have a good time.

So what does work?

Contacting media with Twitter seems to have its benefits. We have some positive experiences from searching out individual journalists and instead of mailing the website, write to them on Twitter. They usually have around a couple of thousand followers, and there is a chance they might notice your message. We managed to contact one great guy at Android Authority, and got our mobile game on the front page as an Indie App of the day of Android Authority for a whole weekend. We got around 100 downloads from Android Authority, which isn’t really encouraging. Android Authority is more focused on devices and apps, which might explain why the download count is quite low.
